ANNUAL TEEN ART EXHIBIT Artspace's Annual Teen Art Exhibit opens on January 10, 2008. Participating Schools: Mahar, Mohawk Trail, Pioneer Valley and Frontier Regional Schools; Northfield Mt. Hermon, Stoneleigh Burnham School, Academy at Charlemont, Deerfield Academy, Four Rivers Charter School and Greenfield High School. Awards Ceremony Reception is Friday, January 25, 5 - 7 p.m. The exhibit is open M-F, 1 to 6 pm and Saturdays 11- 2 on January 26. The exhibit ends on February 8. The Awards Ceremony is open to the public
The 2008 Exhibit is underwritten by the NickoDemos Memorial Benefit.
CHAMBER MUSIC WEEKEND INTENSIVE Artspace will sponsor a chamber music weekend intensive on February 2 & 3. The weekend is open to students of all ages and abilities and all instruments are welcome. Participants will play in small groups (quartets, trios, etc.), a chamber orchestra and a larger ensemble. Players will be matched and grouped by experience. All ensembles will be coached or conducted by an Artspace music faculty member.
Participants will meet at Artspace on Saturday, February 2nd from 10 4, and on Sunday, February 3rd at Second Congregational Church in Greenfield from 1 3:30. There will be a concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday with a reception to follow. The concert is open to the public and there is no admission.
Tuition for the weekend is $50.00 and $25.00 for additional family members. Financial aid is available. Call Artspace to register. Beginning students need to have 6 months of private instruction or 1 year of group lessons.
Last year, over 30 students of all ages participated in the weekend intensive. Parents and children, siblings and friends worked together to make music. Quite a wonderful experience!
HEARTS ON FIRE The 5th Annual Hearts on Fire Auction will be held on Monday, February 11, 5:30 7:30 at Hope and Olive Restaurant in Greenfield and will feature hearty appetizers, a cash bar, and a silent auction. Auction proceeds support Artspace classes, exhibits, collaborative programs with neighborhood schools, and provide financial aid to families who need help with tuition.
Artwork, services, vacation home rentals and gift certificates will be available for bidding. Tickets are $15 each and are available at Artspace. Call 413-772-6811 to reserve tickets.
Artspace's music and art programs serve 250 students weekly from age 1 to 80 years. Proceeds from Hearts on Fire will be used for financial aid for students of all ages.

Discovering Drawing with Becky Clark, ages 5 and 6, will meet on Wed. 4 - 5 pm. Fee: $190 Art Foundations, ages 5-7, with Rachel Roberts will meet on Thurs 4 pm. Fee: $196 Kids Clay, ages 5-10, will meet on Tues. at 4. Rhonda Wainshilbaum is the teacher. Fee: $205 Art from Many Cultures will meet on Mondays at 4. Ages 6- 8. Fee: $200. Explorations in Art will meet on Wed. at 4. Fee: $210. Oil Painting (water based) for Teens and Adults will meet Thurs. evening 7 - 8:30 and will be taught by painter Justine Crosby. The class will meet for 8 weeks. Fee: $175 includes materials.
New Classes:
Beginning Drawing for teens and adults - Thursdays 1:30 - 3:30 or 6:30 to 8:30. Both classes will be taught by Becky Clark and will meet for 16 weeks. Fee: $315 includes materials. Drawing for Ages 7 10, taught by Becky Clark, Thursdays 4-5:30. Fee: $210 includes materials.
Music: Artspace is accepting new students on violin, viola, cello, guitar, brass, woodwinds and voice. Call the office for details.
WINTER WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS No registration fee required. Materials included in class fee.
Jan. 26: Off Loom Weaving Techniques with Sue McFarland, ages 10-13, 9-noon, and $35 Think you need a big expensive piece of equipment to weave? Think again! In this workshop we will learn a number of weaving techniques from different cultures using some surprising materials as looms! You'll never look at a drinking straw the same way again! Feb. 2: Jewelry Making with Liz Smith, 9noon, ages 8-12, $35 Turn your pictures and illustrations into jewelry! We will color and paint designs on polyshrink, bake it and turn it into earrings, pins, barrettes and bracelets. Come with lots of ideas and expect to bring home at least one piece of finished jewelry. Students may bring their own beads to accent their designs.
FEBRUARY SCHOOL VACATION: THREE MORNINGS THREE BLACK ARTISTS Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, February 19, 21 & 22, 9 noon, Ages 8 12, $105.00 Instructor Maggie Nowinski will work students to learn about black artists Kara Walker, Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence in recognition of Black History Month. Each day the work of one of the artists will be discussed, and students will create work inspired by the artist of the day.

February 23 or April 19 Sumi-e Painting: Japanese Brush Painting with Jeanie Schermesser, Saturdays 10-4, $90 each day, mat. incl. Try your hand at mastering brush and ink. You'll soon be creating expressive and visually dynamic paintings with only a few simple strokes! We will start with a series of painting exercises to teach you how to hold, load, and control your brush. Soon you will be painting plum blossoms, bamboo, orchid, and chrysanthemum that represent the four seasons in Japan. We will also do some nature painting.
ADULT & TEEN EVENING CLASS Moku Hanga: Japanese Woodblock Printing (6 wks), with Jeanie Schermesser Begins Feb. 4 & April 7, Mondays, 7-9 p.m., $160 each session, mat. incl. Moku Hanga is the Japanese term for woodblock print (moku means wood and hanga means print). Japanese woodblock prints are known especially for their intense use of color and for the fact that the pigments are water-based rather than oil-based. Students will create and carve a design that will be printed in 3 colors- 1 block for each color, all registered by "kento marks" to print over top of one another for the finished design. We will print a small edition using traditional tools and materials.
