Our Time Age 18 mos - 3 yrs. with caregiver 12 weeks, begins Sept. 19 & Feb. 6 Wednesdays, 9:30 - 10:30 Instructor: Amy Crawford Fee: $175.00 each session, materials included Along with an accompanying parent or caregiver, children meet weekly to enjoy singing, moving, listening, interacting socially and playing simple instruments. Class curriculum is based on the need for your child to experience freedom to try with the assurance of your support. Class promotes joyful music making as a community and educates parents about the interactive nature of the total development of your child through music, movement and literacy. Home materials include a CD, activity book, and music and movement books.
Family Time Ages birth to 5 12 weeks, begins Sept. 20 & Feb. 7 Thursdays, 11:15 - 12:15 Instructor: Amy Crawford Fee: $175 each session, materials included This family class takes the one-room schoolhouse approach to music. Older children show younger ones how it's done. The class is a multi-layered learning environment. Your children will listen to instruments and to each other, learn from their peers and older children, and enjoy music and movement with hoops, scarves and tumble-around play. Story time and family jams, puppet play and happy singing - all activities encourage discovery and exploration and foster sharing and social skills too. Children's Crafts and Songs Ages 2 to 4 8 weeks, fall classes begin Sept. 20 and Nov. 29 with caregiver Spring classes begin Feb. 7 and Apr. 10 Thursdays, 11:15 - 12:15 Instructor: Rachel Roberts Fee: $105 each session, materials included Enjoy creating crafts together and using them to enrich the experience of singing the familiar songs with our group and at home. Weekly time will be spent cutting, pasting, painting, decorating, singing, and dancing as child-caregiver teams. Dress to get messy.
Early Arts Together! Ages 3 to 5 with caregiver 16 weeks, begins Sept. 20 and Jan. 31 Thursdays, 10 - 11 Instructor: Rachel Roberts Fee: $196 each session, mat included Explore different materials and techniques as you make art together in sculpture, printmaking, painting, drawing and collage! Learn basic pinch, coil and slab construction methods in clay. Use natural and found objects to make colorful prints by pressing them into Styrofoam scratch board. Take rubbings from textured surfaces. We will also make 2D collages and 3D assembled pieces using paper, cloth, wood and glue. Class time includes art games and viewing prints of art work by various 20th century artists.
5 through 13 Years
Discovering Drawing Ages 5-6 16 weeks, begins Sept. 19 and Jan. 30 Wednesdays, 4–5 Instructor: Astrid Sheckels Fee: $190 each session, materials included Come learn the basic skills of drawing as we focus on line, shape and form. In class we will work on drawing exercises, and every week students will be able to take home a completed drawing. This is a very structured and rewarding class designed to give students the foundation needed to be able to draw well. No art experience is necessary, only a desire to learn to draw!
Art Foundations Ages 5-7, caregiver suggested 16 weeks, begins Sept. 20 & Jan. 31 Thursdays, 3:30-4:30 Instructor: Rachel Roberts Fee: $196 each session, materials included Explore different materials and techniques as you make art in drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and sculpture. Basic elements of line, shape, and color will be reviewed and expanded. Class time includes art games or a brief story time, and viewing prints of artwork by various 20th century artists. Dress to get messy. Class is a good beginning class for new students or a continuation of Early Arts Together for returning students. Spring Session will focus on new artists and activities, in addition to continued exploration of techniques used in fall.
Kids Clay Ages 5 -10 16 weeks, begins Sept. 20 and Jan. 31 Thursdays, 4 - 5 Instructor: Rhonda Wainshilbaum Fee: $205.00 each session, materials included Everyone loves the feeling of sinking his or her fingers into clay! Kids will make pots, textured tiles, and sculptures using slab, pinch and coil techniques. Students can also try the potter's wheel. Students will finish projects by adding surface decorations, and underglaze colors before clay is fired. You can use the finished pots for serving food! It is very satisfying to use what one has made in class. Come explore real clay!
Beginning Violin Class Ages 6 and 7 16 weeks, Begins Sept. 20 and Jan. 31 Thursdays, 4 - 5 Instructor: Amy Bateman Fee: $190 each semester Students meet weekly to be introduced to basic skills - how to hold the violin and bow, care of the instrument, use of the left hand on the finger board and the bow in the right hand to produce accurate pitch and clear tone. Note and rhythm reading will be introduced.
Art from Many Cultures Ages 6-8 16 weeks, Begins Sept. 17 & Jan. 28 Mondays, 3:30–4:30 Instructor: Rachel Roberts Fee: $200 each semester, materials included Explore ancient and contemporary world cultures through their arts and crafts. Different materials and techniques will be used together in printmaking, papermaking, textiles, mosaics, weaving, and pottery to create representational 2D and 3D artwork. Projects will focus on African, Asian, Caribbean, Central American, Indonesian, Mediterranean, and Native North American cultures. Class time will include a brief story time and viewing cultural artwork. Dress to get messy.
Picture Book Art Ages 7-12 16 weeks, begins Sept. 18 & Jan. 29 Tuesdays, 4-5:30 Instructor: Astrid Sheckels Fee: $210 each semester, materials included Imagine a fairy tale that is told by using your own drawings. With guidance, your drawings will become an original book. Careful planning, creative thinking and patience are needed to make a good picture book. We will use books by Eric Carle, Jan Brett, David Wiesner and others for inspiration. We will make storyboards and learn simple bookbinding skills. Families will be invited to a "read-in" at the end of the semester. We may also have surprise visits from local picture book authors. A trip to the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art will be planned.
Explorations in Art Age 8- 10 16 weeks, begins Sept. 18 & Jan. 29 Tuesdays, 3:30-4:30 Instructor: Rachel Roberts Fee: $210 each semester, materials included Explore various crafts and art by concentrating on one subject for 4 weeks of classes. Class time will include a brief story time or viewing examples of work being studied. In the Fall, class will concentrate on Paper Arts, Bookmaking, Weaving and Fabric Dying & Printing. Class will make 2D and 3D paper artwork, explore a variety of techniques to construct simple books, explore ancient and contemporary techniques to create weavings and tie-dye, batik, paint and print fabric. In the Spring, class will explore FIMO/Polymer clay, Block Printing, Mask Making, and Papier Maché. Class will use a variety of clay techniques to make simple creative buttons and beads from FIMO/Polymer clay; explore ancient and contemporary techniques in block printing to create representational 2D and 3D art; create a variety of masks inspired by different cultures; and make and decorate representational 3D projects using both traditional and contemporary papier mache methods.
Children's Singing Class Ages 8 - 13 14 weeks, begins Sept. 18 and Feb. 5 Tuesdays, 4-5 Instructor: Margery Heins Fee: $170 each session Children will study good singing technique as part of a highly enjoyable class experience. Together, young singers will learn new songs mainly from classical, folk, and musical theater styles. Students will expand their ranges, learn to sing with breath support, and gain confidence. Music reading will also be studied, and there will be opportunities for performance. The class is open to beginning and experienced young singers.
Beginning Woodwind Ages 8 and older Group Lessons Saturdays, 9-10:30 4 weeks: October 6, 13, 20 & 27 Instructor: Jeri Bannister Fee: $90 (Minimum 4) Explore your interest in music by taking 4 lessons on a woodwind instrument - flute, clarinet, or saxophone. Instrument can be rented from any reputable music dealer. You will learn how to hold the instrument, the correct mouth positions (embouchure), finger positions, breathing from the diaphragm muscle for better tone quality, to read music on the staff to play simple melodies, and to play by ear. Hopefully, these 4 lessons will inspire you to continue study on the chosen instrument.

- October 20: Weave a Basket with Christine Conniff,
Ages 8-12 9–noon, $38 Weave a basket and add shells, glass beads, gemstones, charms, wooden pieces, hemp twine, black cording or colorful reeds to decorate it. The basket makes a great gift or handy storage for your own stuff. Hang it on a wall or put in on your desk. Size 5 1/2 X 3" by 4" high.
- December 8: Painted 3D Paper Constructions with Peter Dudley
Ages 8-12, 9-noon, $35 We will make birds, animals, ships or vehicles from paper and then paint the finished pieces. Each student will have a paper sculpture to take home at the end of the workshop.
- January 26: Off Loom Weaving Techniques with Sue McFarland
Ages 10-13, 9-noon, and $35 Think you need a big expensive piece of equipment to weave? Think again! In this workshop we will learn a number of weaving techniques from different cultures using some surprising materials as looms! You'll never look at a drinking straw the same way again!
- February 2: Jewelry Making with Liz Smith
Ages 8-12, $35, 9–noon, Turn your pictures and illustrations into jewelry! We will color and paint designs on polyshrink, bake it and turn it into earrings, pins, barrettes and bracelets. Come with lots of ideas and expect to bring home at least one piece of finished jewelry. Students may bring their own beads to accent their designs.
Feb. School Vacation: Mixed Media Collage on Paper Feb. 18-22, 9-noon each day, ages 8-12 Instructor: Maggie Nowinski Fee: $160, materials included Each of the five classes will begin with a brief discussion on the collage artist of the day and viewing examples of his/her work to provide inspiration. Students will work on their own collages with assistance from the instructor. On the final day, students will complete their collages, look at each other's work and discuss it as a group. Our goals for the week are for students to gain basic skills in collage, to create a small body of work, and to feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.
- March 15, 22 and 29: Papier Maché with Peter Dudley
9-noon each Sat., ages 6–10, $95 Students will make an armature to support their sculptures. Students will use paper and glue to mold their pieces which will be finished with paint and mixed materials in the last class.
- May 10: Intro to Feltmaking with Sue McFarland,
Ages 10-13, 9–noon, $35 Learn about this ancient form of creating fabric with sheep's fleece, water and your own elbow grease! In this workshop participants will learn to make a flat piece of felt and how to add decoration and embellishment to create a picture or small mat. We'll also explore felting around a form to create a small 3-D piece suitable for a small sculpture or pouch.
Classes for Teens and Adults
Teen Clay Ages: 10-15 16 weeks, begins Sept. 20 & Jan. 31 Thursdays, 5:30–7 pm Instructor: Rhonda Wainshilbaum Fee: $235 each session, materials included Students will learn handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques while making functional and sculptural pieces. Form versus function will be discussed. Students will be encouraged to bring sketches of projects they would like to make. Class will be structures by individual interests. We will discuss how surface decoration and glazing should compliment the shape of the piece. Finished work may be used and will be treasured.
Collography Teens and Adults 12 weeks, begins Feb. 5 Tuesdays, 6:30–8 pm Begins Feb. 5 Instructor: Peter Dudley Fee: $235, materials included Collography is a printmaking process in which materials are applied to a rigid substrate (such as cardboard or wood), ink is applied to the resulting collage, and the board is printed onto paper or another material. The resultant print is termed a collograph. Collography is a very open printmaking method. Ink may be applied to the upper surfaces of the plate with a brayer for a relief print, or ink may be applied to the entire board and then removed from the upper surfaces but remaining in the spaces between objects, resulting in an intaglio print. A combination of both intaglio and relief methods may also be employed. A printing press may or may not be used. Come and experiment with printmaking.
Drawing for Adults 6 weeks, begins Sept. 21 Fridays, 7-8:30 pm Instructor: Astrid Sheckels Fee: $118, materials included Friday nights just for you to make art! Learn to draw - and essential skill for anyone interested in art making of any kind. This is a great class for beginners and experienced alike who desire to strengthen their observation and drawing skills. We will focus on accurately rendering what we see by using basic line, shape, and shadow in order to create the illusion of depth and three-dimensional space. We will work with pencils, charcoal, and erasers.
Moku Hanga: Japanese Woodblock Printing Teens and Adults 6 weeks, begins Jan. 7 & April 7 Mondays, 7-9 pm Instructor: Jeanie Schermesser Fee: $160 each session, materials included Moku Hanga is the Japanese term for woodblock print (moku means wood and hanga means print). Japanese woodblock prints are known especially for their intense use of color and for the fact that the pigments are water-based rather than oil-based. Students will create and carve a design that will be printed in 3 colors - 1 block for each color, all registered by "kento marks" to print over top of one another for the finished design. We will print a small edition using traditional tools and materials.
Oil Painting for Adults 16 weeks Thursdays, 7-8:30 pm Fall begins Sept. 20, Spring Jan. 31 Instructor: Astrid Sheckels Fee: $225 each session, materials included Learn to translate what you see onto canvas through the medium of oil painting. Class consists of a series of painting projects, which are all related to understanding color, value, and composition. We will be painting from both the still life and photo-using water based oil paint. Some previous art experience would be helpful, but not necessary. Take a break from your busy week to relax and make oil paintings.
Open Figure Drawing Session Adults No Instruction- All Skill Levels Sundays, 10:30-1:30 Schedule TBD Fee: $80 for eight sessions. Bring your own materials/supplies. The figure drawing group is looking for a few new members. 12 - 15 people meet once or twice a month to draw or paint using a live model for inspiration. Each session begins with a series of quick one or two minute poses designed to capture the gesture of the model. As the morning progresses, longer poses lead to more detailed studies. The group breaks for lunch and returns at 12:30/ The last hour is devoted to a single composition for an in-depth study of the nude. Participants will need to bring drawing materials and a bag lunch. Printmaking - Teens and Adults 12 weeks, begins March 5 Wednesdays, 7-9 pm Instructor: Jeanie Schermesser Fee: $300, materials included Experiment and explore basic printmaking techniques including; monoprints, glue prints, collographs, ink transfer prints, and linocuts. Work with brayers, block printing inks, and a small printing press, to create limited editions of your art. Emphasis is on learning about color, composition, and imaginative expression. Drawing skills are not necessary to have fun with this art form, only an enthusiastic spirit for discovery!
Voice Class for Teens and Adults 10 weeks, begins Oct. 2 and Feb. 5 Tuesdays, 5:30-6:30 Instructor: Margery Heins Fee: $170 each session Class members will explore correct use of the voice through breathing, tone production, intonation, and range. A major part of the class will involve interpretation of solo, unison, and part songs, largely from the classical literature with some attention to other styles. Work on note reading skills will also be included. There will be an informal performance at the end of each semester.
Watercolor for Adults 16 weeks Wednesdays, 10-noon Fall begins Sept. 19, Spring Jan. 30 Instructor: Astrid Sheckels Fee: $315 each session, materials included This class is designed for those who are truly interested in learning to paint. Students will explore watercolor as an integrative process involving aspects of drawing, design, and color. Some of the painting projects will include color theory, still life and landscape, as well as, opportunities for personal creativity.

- October 6: Mixed Media Collage on Paper
Instructor; Maggie Nowinski Saturday, October 6, 10–4 Fee: $83, materials included Students will be introduced to works by modern and contemporary collage artists, ranging from Picasso, Romare Reardon, and Eric Carle. Students will also be introduced to composition, symbolism, abstraction, positive and negative space, color and pattern. Collage is a wonderful hands-on, satisfying way to engage in the process of making a dynamic and meaningful image. Students may chose to create a self portrait, portrait, landscape, or abstract collage. We will have photography books available for students to look at for inspiration. Students may bring a photograph from home. The instructor will give brief demonstration of masking off the paper, gluing, layering and cutting. Students may work on more than one collage at a time. At the end of the day, students will present what they made to one another. The goal is to leave the workshop with new collage skills and with one finished, ready-to-frame collage. Bring a lunch.
- Nov. 3 & 4: Seed Bead Stitches and Weaving Weekend
Instructor: Sally Chaffee Maron Saturday, 10–4, Sunday, 1–4 pm Fee: $160, materials included Learn to use seed beads to make your own jewelry. In this weekend workshop, you will learn the basic seed beading stitches - Peyote Stitch and Brick Stitch on Saturday, and Cross Needle Weave on Sunday. Seed Bead is a term used to describe a wide variety of small beads, round or cylindrical in shape, used in bead weaving techniques. Seed beads come in a wide range of sizes, colors and finishes. Seed beads have a uniform guideline for sizing, with the size being the number of seed beads that will fit in an inch i.e., 11 size 11/0 seed beads to an inch or 8 size 8/0 to an inch. No prior seed beading experience is needed for these workshops. Written instructions will be provided for each of the techniques. We will create unique wearable art - bracelets, necklaces and earrings.
- December 15: Reverse Painting on Glass
Instructor: Kate Marion Lapierre Saturday, December 15, 9-noon Fee: $45, materials included Students will do an acrylic painting on the reverse side of glass to create a finished piece of art that will be viewed from the front. Students will learn how to layer line and color and to write words or signatures in reverse. We will scratch through the paint when wet, or dry to add interesting textures, patterns, or reveal other colors underneath. Glass will be provided but if students are interested in creating more than one piece and have glass from standard frames that they would like to experiment on, they can bring it to the class. Students are encouraged to bring in photographs or drawings to serve as inspiration or work from memory. We will explore landscape, portrait, still life, or abstract images. No previous experience necessary. Bring a desire to have fun while using your creativity to complete your unique piece of artwork.
- February 23 or April 19: Sumi-e Painting - Japanese Brush Painting with Jeanie Schermesser
Saturdays 10-4 Fee: $90 each day, materials included Try your hand at mastering brush and ink. You'll soon be creating expressive and visually dynamic paintings with only a few simple strokes! We will start with a series of painting exercises to teach you how to hold, load, and control your brush. Soon you will be painting plum blossoms, bamboo, orchid, and chrysanthemum that represent the four seasons in Japan. We will also do some nature painting.
- March 1: Mixed Media Art on Wood
Instructor: Kate Marion Lapierre Saturday, 9-noon Fee: $45, materials included Students will paint and collage on wood with a variety of materials. Students will learn how to prepare an interesting surface on the wood and then explore the painting of portrait, landscape, still life or abstract imagery. Wood is an excellent medium for collage and assemblage. Students are encouraged to bring any pieces that have personal meaning to them, that could be used in collage - old jewelry, beads, buttons, fabric, photos, maps, postcards, stamps, etc. The goal of the class is to experiment with a variety of materials and paint and to create a finished piece of art on wood. No experience is necessary only a desire to be creative.
- April 5 and 6: Seed Bead Stitches and Weaving Weekend
