Artspace was founded in 1973 by parents who wanted more in school and out-of-school arts experiences for their children. Since then, we have worked with county schools to bring them performing and visual art in-school and after school programming, residencies, curriculum development and art exhibits involving preschool, elementary, middle and high school students. Artspace's mission is to encourage and nurture the appreciation of and participation in the arts by offering programs and instruction; and by advocating the importance of the arts in education and in the community. Our gallery, art and music programs, special events and performances attract 350 students annually with the majority taking weekly lessons and classes. Our outreach programs serve another 200 children annually. Approximately 18% of our students receive financial aid.
This year, Artspace and the Shelburne Arts Cooperative are working together. Some members of the Coop are offering workshops here and there will be group exhibit in March.
In 07-08, Artspace will continue Green River Connection, a curriculum development project supported by a Creative Schools grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. This year, art curriculum created in 06-07 to support the Atlantic Salmon Egg Rearing Program will be tested in the 4th grade classrooms of Newton Elementary School in Greenfield. Thank you to TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation, Xeric Foundation, Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts and Wilson's Department Store for their financial support of this project.
Support Artspace. Each year, Artspace relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses to help us close the gap between operating expenses and earned income (tuition). Tuition fees do not cover the cost of operating expenses. We are grateful to those individuals and businesses who donate to the Annual Fund. These donations help to keep Artspace fiscally sound.
Every contributor is considered a member and is eligible to participate in our annual Members Exhibit. Donors at the $50 level (or higher) receive a 5% discount on classes offered in our catalog.
